Following a number of related issues that have emerged:

USB2 PRO DUO Card Readers are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for all big capacity 1GB and 2GB Memory Stick PRO DUO memory cards (from both Sony and SanDisk) that are for use with the Sony Ericsson W800i as well as the K750i and D750i.

A number of customers have been reporting very similar problems when using the supplied USB cable and phone PC software to manage content on their memory cards... with speed problems, corrupt files, and corrupt cards as well the end result.

We hope this is an issue that Sony Ericsson will address in their firmware releases, especially as we are now able to sell 1GB and 2GB capacities at much better prices .. (can anyone confirm if the problem is fixed in the Sony Ericsson W900i series ? )..

For capacities of 1GB and over, USB2 card readers are really an essential item anyway, because they are many times faster than the USB phone cable for transferring your music, video, games etc, and can be used to safely re-format cards, and can be used as a flash stick for carrying data between mulitple PCs as well as mobile phones and PSP machines..

Many of you out there will own a laptop, a desktop, or indeed a printer, or other device that may now come with a built-in card reader for SD , MMC, MS, or other memory card formats.

Well i am afraid to tell you that even though you may have popped down to Dixons, or Currys this afternoon to buy the machine, there is absolutely no guarantee that the card reader will be able to handle the most recent memory cards that we stock, at the larger capacities.

By larger capacity, i mean MMC, SD, mini-SD, RS-MMC, and MS PRO DUO memory in capacities above 256MB...

This is because many of these embedded devices use older (and often cheaper) chipsets in them (dating from 1yr or 2yrs ago), which have never been designed or tested with memory cards like 1GB MobyMemory mini-SD, or our 2GB MMC, which only got released in the last month. It is understandable when you think about it.

When people try the cards in older readers, they invariably come crying and complaining to us claiming to have been sold a duff memory card, often after corrupting the card themselves by trying to use and format in one of these non-compatible readers.

To save everyone a lot of hassle, in emails, secondary purchases of card readers (which is very common), and returns for us to re-format and re-send out...

PLEASE BUY A COMPATIBLE USB2 CARD READER FROM US WHEN YOU BUY OUR BIGGER MEMORY CARDS, OR MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPATIBLE MEMORY CARD READER.

We do try and encourage people to buy a reader with their cards, especially as the price is discounted that way too. So please take this recommendation seriously. Modern card readers like ours offer many times faster transfers to your memory card than bluetooth, or the USB cable supplied with your mobile phone.

It will save a lot of questions and frustrations later for you, and for us too

Robbie album to be sold on memory cards

According to this News BBC article, The Carphone Warehouse is going to be marketing the latest Robbie album on memory card format(MMC).

This is a major breakthrough for memory card use in mobile phones, and will raise awareness as mobiles being used as an alternative to digital music players like the iPod. It can only be a good thing for the industry.

Questions that do spring to mind from the sale of pre-loaded music memory cards are:

Is it risky to have your prime (and only copy) of a purchased album stored on a memory card (which is erasable format in non-SD form) ?
Will purchasers be able to copy/backup the album material to another medium (like their PC or burn to CD) for safekeeping ?
Does £30 represent good value for what is probably a 128mb + legitimate copy of Robbie's latest album.?
Is it better to have a whole stack of small (128mb or less) memory cards with 1 album each or one or two big memory cards with a whole bunch of your albums stored on them which you have ripped from your CD collection..?

Personally, I still feel that the non-erasable and proven durability of CD format is a handy and secure backup for any music that you then convert (rip) for playback on on your mobile memory device (or digital music player for that matter).

But for those consumers who are, very lazy or tech-illiterate (and don't want to rip their own songs from CD), and don;t mind risking the loss of their album if it gets corrupted (which does happen with solid state memory) then this might prove to be a popular format for driving future music sales.

We are looking for smartphone enthusiasts to author HOWTO guides for our forums.

Your HOWTO guide should deal with an aspect of your mobile phone in use with music, video, games or another application which requires you to use, and get the most out of, your MobyMemory card. The areas that we think will be most useful are for music and video conversion for specific mobiles. If there are things that are complicated to install or setup with your mobile and your home computer, that will be a good topic. Also, MAC owners out there have no guides on HOWTO setup their software; that would be great for them.

We will reward well-produced and useful HOWTO guides with items from our product range. And of course, you will keep the credit on the guide. Fame at last

Please PM or email me to check with possible HOWTO topics before you start (to make sure we have no clashes, and are of most use to our forum users). HOWTO authors will be added to our Contributors group and will be able to post their articles to a private forum where they can be reviewed prior to publication.

Not all memory cards work well with mobile phones, even if the memory type matches. Some will not work at all, and others will not offer a reliable performance.

This makes the decision of which memory card to go for very difficult for the consumer. Note:

These tests were conducted at the command-line using the copy command to transfer a single test file (.zip) to and from one connected drive (C: drive) to another ([Removable Drive]).

Read/write results will vary according to differing environmental test conditions; including USB port implementations on the PC (and USB port number used), other running operations on the PC(incl services etc), the card reader used, the USB cable, and the PC itself . For best results, the [Card Reader]-[Cable]-[PC USB port] connection should be USB2 (or USB Hi-Speed) end-to-end.

Nokia announces new MMC-based smartphones

Today - 14th June 2004

Nokia announces two new MMC-based smartphones to join its existing line-up from the 3rd quarter 2004.

These include the Nokia 6260, which is a Series 60 Symbian based smartphone, but in a clamshell form, with rotating screen. The phone will take MMC-based memory expansion cards. New features include push to talk, "always on" email, document and presentation viewer for MS Office docs.

The other phone of interest is a 3G-based smartphone - the Nokia 6630. Again with Symbian Series 60 operating system and menu, this will be the smallest 3G smartphone available. It will use the smaller memory form-factor of RS-MMC. Other features include a megapixel camera, real-time video streaming, and MP3 player.

We look forward at MobyMemory.com to giving these new Nokia mobiles a very thorough testing with our range of memory cards when they arrive in the autum !

Why buy MMC card for an SD-slot phone.?

The question is why more people do not buy MMC cards for their SD-slot mobile phones, and other digital devices.?

MMC is a more generic memory card standard than SD, simply because MMC cards are comptaibile with the vast majority of both SD and MMC slot devices. However, SD cards are rarely, if ever compatible with MMC slot devices.

Manufacturers like Nokia and Siemens are likely to continue supporting the MMC (and the new RS-MMC standard). This means that for a like-for-like price and card performance, an MMC card you buy today is more likely to be compatible with the phone you buy next month, or next year. (Leaving to one side Sony devices that only support the Memory stick Duo format).

Also, the vast majority of consumers will have no interest in the extra security features integrated into the SD (secure digital) format, which is primarily designed as a way for companies to preserve ownership rights on transfer of copyrighted material onto cards.

The new RS-MMC will be compatible with RS-MMC, and MMC and SD (through an interface jacket). The mini-SD standard will be compatible with mini-SD and SD.

NB. The new RS-MMC slot and mini-SD slot devices are never likely to be compatible with each others' card formats, because the mini-SD is squarish, whilst the RS-MMC is longer and narrower. Unfortunately, not every design decision taken over standards is always in the best interest of the consumer!
