I have just bought a 2GB MobyMemory miniSD card and it doesn't work in my N80. I can get it to work in a card reader on my PC but as soon as I put it in the phone it freezes and I have to remove the battery to turn it off. If I try to start the phone with the memory card inside it hangs on the Nokia startup screen.

I have tried formatting the card using both FAT and FAT 32 and I've tried copying all the files from the Nokia 128MB miniSD card like I've read on other forums but nothing has been successful.

Does anyone know if a future firmware upgrade will fix this or do I just accept that this card is not going to work in the phone.

I bought the phone on the 3 network on June 28th and the firmware version is...

v 3.0618.0.2
23-05-2006
RM92
Nokia N80 (45.02)

HI mate, the same problem as i used to have with mine! I, like another user, am now using Adata 512mb card and it sworking just fine, i'd recommend getting one to allow you to use the phone to its full potential, Nokia sell the same size cards for almost £35 but i got mine from ebay for £15.00, i think a 1gig is about £25.00 and a 2gb is £35....my advice is stick with what works and right now its the Adata cards

It's a pity that the card can't be used. Will have to save my pennies for another ;o) There are rumours of a new firmware version - V 4.0020.0.1 (25-06-06) - on a few forums. It will be interesting to see if this fixes anything. If people are having so many problems with these cards maybe MobyMemory shouldn't be saying that they are fully compatible with the N80.

as you say this is supposed to be an issue being addressed by nokia in imminent firmware release.

here is some info we have had back:

Apparently, there are hidden folders on the miniSD card, provided together with nokia phones.
An error in the firmware is responsible for the fact, that if cards are formatted in the phone, the hidden folders are not created.

The following workaround MIGHT work:

- make folder on hard disk

- Copy the contents of the nokia-sd card to this folder (make sure to include hidden folders/files)

- Insert new card in reader

- Copy content of hard disk folder to sd card

if you can try this to see if it sorts out your problem. if it does, please report back on here.

if not, then let us know, and if you dont want to wait for the firmware release, we can get the card returned and refund your order.

yours sincerely

I've tried formatting the card as both FAT and FAT 32 and copying all files, including system and hidden files, and it still doesn't seem to work. When you insert the card into the phone it freezes. Maybe this approach works on other versions of firmware compared to mine.

Unfortunately it looks like I will have to wait for a fix as I don't think the card can be returned. Compared to the supplied Nokia card, the Moby Memory card has been extremely difficult to remove from the Nokia N80 and the supplied Moby Memory USB card reader and as such some of the plastic has chipped off.

I bought a Kingston 1g memory card last saturday, and encountered the "corrupted memory card" or " cannot read memory card" on my N80 phone, 3 days later. REformat the card, still showed the same error.

I went to Nokia to complaint and they insert my card to another N80 again, the same error occurred. However, when i insert another memory card of 1G, there was no issue.

I wonder if the memory card i purchased was a substandard quality memory card, in testing i called it a bin 2 device, not a bin 1 device (excellent performance).

I am considering switching to SANDISK....any advise out there ? More expensive, but better performance?

After having the same problem myself with both Kingston and Sandisk i would suggest the Adata card without hesitation, this is the card that seems to work the best, the fastest and its also the cheapest too! Look on Ebay for sellers of this manufacturer, as pf today i have still had no problems with mine

regards

I've just exchanged the old N80 for a new one (for reasons besides the memory card issue) and it still doesn't work.

I actually tried the Kingtson and Sandisk cards in an N80 with newer firmware than mine and it still gave the corrupted card rubbish, however having said that i have seen one today thats using a 256mb Sandisk card without any problems... all i can suggest is to try the Adata card or a lower sized card, 512mb maybe?
